Meet Dr. Rachel Black - Board Certified Periodontist
Dr. Rachel M Black is a board certified periodontist focusing on soft tissue plastic surgery, regeneration procedures and implant-based rehabilitation.

Education and Involvement
Dr. Black grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania, working regularly in her father’s oral surgery office. She attended Harvard University majoring in English, and went on to receive her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from Rutgers University. She then went on to complete a residency program in periodontics at the prestigious University of Washington in Seattle, earning a certificate in periodontics, a Masters of Science in Dentistry and certification in IV sedation.
While at the University of Washington, Dr. Black was well trained in dental implant surgery including full mouth implant rehabilitation, bone and sinus reconstruction, surgical and orthodontic crown lengthening, soft tissue reconstruction as well as other periodontal plastic surgical procedures. Her training focused extensively on comprehensive full mouth rehabilitative care and an interdisciplinary approach to treatment.
She is board-certified, and a member of leading Periodontal and Dental Implant organizations, including:

Advancing the field of periodontology
Dr. Black was selected as a finalist for the VOLPE International Periodontal Research Competition at The Ohio State University. The VOLPE competition is for the best clinical research in periodontology by students in dentistry, where she placed third. Her research focused on peri-implantitis, a condition where implants undergo bone loss following bacterial infection. She examined the efficacy of various decontamination methods as well as the effects whether those methods can increase bone loss.
Dr. Black was recently selected as one of four clinical research finalists at the Balint Orban Memorial Award. The renowned competition has been a featured even at the American Academy of Periodontology’s Annual Meeting since 1960 for clinical or basic research presented by periodontal residents.
Caring and Committed
Dr. Black has dreamed of a career in dentistry since she was very young and is thrilled to begin working in Carmel. New to the community, Dr. Black enjoys jogging, skiing, cooking, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
